What is going to happen after these discussions? Is there any face-to-face workshop?
Hello Mnyamezeli
There is no face to face workshop after these discussions but we do hope that the discussions will help broadcasters get ideas of nutrition programs in their radio stations
Why green leafy vegetables are more important especially when you are hiv/aids?
Dear Busi and Team members.
I am wondering if such short platforms like this (nutrition) can consider giving some motivating prizes or gifts just like the e-courses that some of us have participated in? Could the idea of giving say; audio recorders, refresher trainings, little financial support to Journalists/media practitioners to enable them produce articles/ programmes that can be evaluated/reviewed be considered at a later stage? I would like to suggest that if three articles/programmes or short reports can be selected and reporters are supported to produce more articles/programmes and publish or air them as a way of educating people on nutrition, there can be a difference. I know it is indeed not easy due to financial constraints and design of programme, but i have seen many people undertake trainings but they stay on shelves. May i please get comment on this?
@smawerere that is food for thought. I understand there was no plan like that for this discussion and luckily you also understand everything is dependent on budgeting and design of the programme. Let us just hope it is something that can be considered in future discussions.
Dear experts and team.
I would like to ask some questions here:
-
One health expert said fruits are very good for health and he said they can work better when one eats them before a meal, then take 30 minutes to eat food. Is it true? Because personally, when i try to eat fruit salads first at lunch time before food, i get a terrible discomfort! When i eat the food after the fruits, the stomach feels up, it becomes heavy and i will remain full with a heavy stomach throughout with kind of gas in the stomach. Then i lose appetite for food until the following day. Why is it so?
-
Some other Doctor said in a radio programme that it is good to take a glass of cold water early morning before taking anything else! Another expert said no…that is not proper, that one has to begin with hot tea or hot water or hot food in the morning first before taking anything else! Which is which experts?
Thank you.
Thank you @smawerere for your question, it is important. I have also heard from one of the participants talking about eating fruits before a meal. I will leave this question for our nutrition experts @kinabonutrition @Bibi to respond.
Dear Busi and Nelly.
I have realized that the current topic that you posted for this week’s discussion:“The link between Agricultural Production and Nutrition” is no longer accessible. Since i made a contribution already, i would now like to read from others but this topic is nowhere to be accessed! When i try all means to see it, i get a message that this topic is private!!! Did you receive my submission on this topic early this week ending? Or i did not post it by mistake?
I thank you.
Dear Busi,
I asked these questions below at the beginning of this discussion but have not yet gotten experts’ answers!

Hello Sarah @smawerere
I am still hoping our experts @Bibi and @kinabonutrition will respond to these questions. They are our nutrition experts in this discussion.
Okay.
Thank you for your response i hope to get the answers and this will give more information on nutrition and set pace for the way forward.
Dear Smawerere Thank you for your question. As already indicated in my response to Daniel absorption, transportation, and utilisation of nutrients depend on nutrients coming from various types of foods. Therefore it is critical that they are consumed together not after several hours. If that happens the foods that are eaten earlier would have been digested and removed from or moved further along the tract. This will lead to making some nutrients present in the foods that are consumed later not to be absorbed or transported and the utilisation of nutrients will not be efficient.
I don’t know the basis of these recommendations. Whether the food is hot or cold, still the body will utilise it. Some of these recommendations can easily being ignored.
We could try the nutrition e-learning for journalists. We could use this platform as a needs assessment platform to get to understand journalists needs to enable us to develop materials for training. But I also see the possibility of nutritionists getting a bit of exposure to journalism so that they could be able to package the nutrition information in a manner that can be shared with journalists.
Green leafy vegetables contain a number of micronutrients that are often missing in the staples that many people consume. In addition, we now realise that there are a number of other components in vegetables that have health benefits and help people in a number of ways. HIV patients need a lot of micronutrients to strengthen their immunity, synthesise blood which is much needed considering that much is being destroyed by the virus.
Busi we could consider in country workshops for journalists. I know that some con tries are doing this. Food for thought.
Thank you very much expert for the response. However, i would like to know at what point can one eat fruits or food. Is it food first or fruits first? Secondly, if one gets such a discomfort after eating fruits before eating food, can the person be advised to eat only fruits for lunch or only food since absorption is a problem?
Also, is it okay to drink cold water in the morning before anything hot? Some people even take just a glass of juice for breakfast! Whether cold first or last is okay since the body will accept whichever-either cold or hot at any time?
Thank you.
Sarah.
The sequence of consumption of foods and fruits depends on individuals’ preference so long as they are all eaten at the same sitting or meal. One could eat fruits first and food later witihout harming the digestion process. however, if consumption of fruits causes discomfort then it is advisable to eat fruits first and weight for three or more hours before eating other foods. For example you can eat fruits in the morning and other foods later so long as the food that is consumed is adequately diversified.
With regards to drinking warm/hot or cold water in the morning also will depend on how the individual can handle the water. There are people who get irritated when they drink hot water or anything hot including tea and milk. There is no physiological benefits of drinking hot or cold water. Drinking water in the morning is useful for revitalizing the organs and helping to cleanse the gastro-intestinal system.
Hello Sarah @smawerere
I just came across this article on drinking water in the morning. It does not only mention a glass of water but 1.5 litres first thing in the morning and wait for an hour before you can eat anything else. Apparently this has amazing therapeutic effects. See here:
The benefits of drinking water in the morning
At the same time, there are benefits to eating fruits before your meals but you have to choose which fruits to eat. See below:

I trust this will help a bit
