Week 1: Introduction and icebreaker

Hi everybody!

My name is Sarah Mawerere and i am a female Broadcaster, currently working with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Radio based here in Kampala-Uganda. I am a Producer and do present programmes on Agriculture and Environment which i present in my local language( Lusoga). I also contribute news to UBC Radio newsroom in English and do also contribute to “On the Farm Programme” which is a 60 minute programme on different agriculture topics. My beat is mainly agriculture and environment. I also have a 30 minute English Radio feature on Workers’ Rights in which i highlight issues concerning the workers.
I have passion for Radio because i enjoy communicating with my people in my local language (Lusoga). I am happy to join you Busi, Nelly and Patience the third time to discuss Climate Change and Agriculture as we learn from expertise knowledge. Also, i feel good to be on the platform with my Barza colleagues this time round.

The three things i would carry with me when floods evade are:

  1. All my children and other family members have to be evacuated first to a safer village or place to save lives first.

  2. Carry some dry ration (maize flour) carried with us as we evacuate for a meal for that day.

  3. Some clothes for wearing and at least a pot for cooking as we evacuate.

All the best as we kick off week one of our discussion.

Hie My name is Pauline Kalumikiza Mbukwa working with Farm Radio Trust as a Program Officer responsible for designing radio programs and capacity building of our radio partners. I love the subject of Climate Change because it is here to stay, but we can do something about it to adapt to the current challnges we are facing, I think you are aware that drought has affected us heavily in our country so much that production of maize and groundnuts has gone down. If there were floods, I would not forget my hoe, cooking pot and my bible.Hoe because I would try and find a piece of land to cultivate, cooking pot because I love to cook and amy bible because I would be comforted with the words in it, and apply it to my current situation believing that God would lead me to a dry land of milk and honey!. Ofcourse I would be carrying my son on my back and try to look around for my husband, who would be a great companion all the way.Lol!

Hello everyone, my name is Gideon Kwame Sarkodie Osei.
I work with ADARS FM in Kintampo, Ghana and a Farm Radio International Ghana IST trainer.
Am a proud two times Gold Winner of the Farmer Program e-Course (2014 and 2015).
I love this discussion because I was a GiZ Climate Change Adaption Project implementer. As a matter of fact, this has exposed me to the realities of climate change and also the fact that broadcaster can be of great help especially in educating farmers with adaptation programs.
It is good to be here, will shall share knowledge and information.

Good to see every one, lets enjoy the discussion.

The first three things I will pick in the case scenario presented will be

  1. My family
  2. Food
  3. Hoe and cutlass

Hello Sarah

Welcome! Great to meet you once more. I trust you will get to share more about your contribution in agricultural programs as we discuss in the weeks.

Cheers

I would take drinking water because it is a necessity and water is life, one cannot survive without water. Food is also for survival and well being in terms of energy and health while blankets is for warmth during harsh cold weather

family, farm tool and groundnut to survive
First, i will get my family out because when the flood is over, we can together start another farm and help each other when there is any similar situation. Family is the first point of security.

Second is some groundnuts. This is because, we need to survive on something

Third is a radio to monitor the situation and access the information on weather. This will help my family and i ascertain when the rains will stop and determine appropriate time to cultivate our land again.

Hello Prince

Welcome! We are delighted to have you on board and hope to hear more about your experiences in reporting agriculture and climate change issues. Thanks for sharing your choices. I would like to challenge you and those that have already shared their choices to comment on each other’s choice of items to take.

Cheers

Am Petronillah from Kenya working for Sulwe fm under Royal Media Services. The Radio targets audience living in Western Region. In the latest Months we have been experiencing floods all over the Country after the Meteorological Department gave a warning on the onset of the rain.Together with the family we have only three things to pick in less than fifteen minutes.
One would be the phone. It is essential in communication and you can be traced wherever you can be so long as it is rapped in a nylon paper. The second item would be a match box. The reason for this is it is also a gadget for communication.Wherever you seek refuge i.e in a far land or forest, when you light a fire it shows there is some lives from where the fire is coming from. The third one would be some bright piece of cloth to be used to keep warm and also a tool for communication.

Dear Everybody,

My name is Alex Wandeba from Uganda, a journalist working with UBC Radio Newsroom as a News Reporter and News Caster in English. I also produce and present a daily popular program on our station called News Hour that features all topics ranging from environment, agriculture, politics, economics, culture etc.

However if faced with a flood I would take with me any farm tools within reach, some seeds and livestock.

My nutritious meal is smashed matooke (bananas), millet bread locally known as kalo, cassava and pumpkin with legumes, g.nuts source and greens.

Thanks

ALex, i want to find out what would be your reason for the LIVESTOCK, you would take along.

Wengo, all your elements are means of communication and that is very critical. But how would you survive if the flood prolongs.

Can you humbly help with some explanation?

Sarah, i think your elements are more than three

My name is Rashid Muzungyo, I have worked with radio stations as a reporter, a news editor, a program producer and presenter. Currently Iam working for Kapchorwa Trinity Radio. Under this office I over see News Department, the Farmers programmes, and deputize the Station Manager. Iam ready to share new ideas regarding climate and agriculture. Iam grateful to be part of this team.

Hello Rashid

Welcome to Barza! We are happy to have you here. We are looking forward to hearing more about your broadcast reports on agriculture and climate change.

You left something out though, please read the icebreaker instructions and tell us your choice of three items and why you would decide on those. I am sure everyone is interested in knowing.

Cheers

Hello Alex

Welcome to Barza. We are happy to have you with us here.

Thanks for sharing your three choices. I have seen @princeappiahgh ask why would you choose to take livestock. I would also like to know why you choose the items you have chosen.

Cheers

Dear Alex.

Welcome aboard. I am really happy that you have joined this important discussion. However, i wondering how you will be able to evacuate with livestock when you have 15 minutes to run away from the evading floods? I imagine how you will beat the cows, goats, sheep, birds as you hurry within the set 15 minutes. Perhaps it can be done but i am just wondering how quick you will do it. Otherwise i am happy to be with you on the platform. Good deliberations.

Hey Princeappiahgh. Yes, my elements are like more than three, but the would be fourth item was supposed to be married with dry ration. What i wanted to say is; when i carry dry ration, i carry it with a pot for cooking the that food. Thanks for your observation

Hi Sarah,
Thanks you share the same concern with Prince and as I told him it would take long, but it depends on how many I have, it could be only one or two that can be easily driven and remember they are
also sensitive to disasters like other colleagues were talking of their
families first.
However the reason I chose those three is; I can resettle and use my
livestock for milk, beef, manure or even sell to get money and carry on.
For the seeds is what I can feed on in the meantime and even plant while
the farm implements is what will help me to clear and till the new garden
elsewhere.
Thanks
Alex
