Week 2: Understanding climate change

Great submission by the expert Mr. Soko.Indeed ,I was amazed by how farmers in Eastern province of Zambia have ventured in agroforestry by planting the tree called gliricidia sepium which returns nutrients to the soil for the farmers to achieve the desire yields.

Yes Sosten,I agree with you broadcasters need to spread messages on the importance of trees in mitigating the effects of climate change, it should not only end at urging the farmers to plant the trees.

Climate change is a global phenomenal that has come about due to human causes in many areasā€¦One of the causes is been due to poor farming methods by cutting trees indefinitely.Due to poor yields exasperated by poor farming as a result of poor rainfall in some regions and higher rainfall in some farmers opt to clear new fields in order to compensate yield loses.

Organisations such as conservation Farming unit Zambia among other stakeholders have propagated climate smart agricultural practices that inculcate minimum tillage.Crop rotation and residue retention coupled up with liming so as to increase fertility levels of land ensure increase yields as opposed to shifting to new land that has to do with deforestation.

Trainings are organized specifically to do with such interventions to curb the rising effects of climate change.

This is very important adding government should be in forefront distributing free seedlings to the people and also traditional leadership should be in the forefront in spearheading such projects to achieve the intended goal

  1. Climate change is a global long term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns.
  2. I am affected in that due to climate change my country has been experiencing too much heat (extreme high temperatures) and that has reduced on productivity levels both in formal and informal work environments. Farmers are frustrated in that they donā€™t know when they are going to do their seasonal farming in that rainfall patterns have reduced and streams/ dams are drying up posing serious hunger to a lot of people in the society.
  3. They need to know what climate change is, the effects of climate change and more especially how farmers contribute or can contribute to fight these drastic changes of climate.
  4. I get information from the internet, radio, TV and newspapers etc.

Great submission Oliver and am glad that you are propagating climate smart agriculture as conservation farming unit.Indeed farmers needs to adapt to practices such as mining tillage because ploughing the land exposes the soil to to much heat ,wind that can carry nutrients away and eventually kills living organisms in the soils.

Thanks Naomi indeed we need concerted efforts in this in order to win the Battle

  1. What is your understanding of climate change?
Ans: Climate change is the change in weather patterns which can either result in unpredictable rainfall patterns, droughts or floods.

  2. How is climate change affecting you and farmers in your area?
Ans: High temperature, Harvest losses and drying of land in some areas of Ghana especially the northern part.

  3. What information do farmers need about climate change?
Ans:1) The important of replanting of trees. 2) The kind or type of land to farm on.

  1. news ways to patronize the Agric technology.
  1. How do you get this information?
Ans: From metrologist, FRI resources, Ministry of food and agriculture ( MOFA) Ghana, and world food program.
