Week 1: Introductions and icebreaker

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Generating Revenue e-Discussion. My name is Busi Ngcebetsha, I am the moderator for this e-discussion. I am a South African working as a consultant for community media projects. I have experience in working for a community radio as a volunteer at first when the community radio station I worked for started in 1996. I also worked for an NGO that trained community media on different aspects.

This discussion is about generating revenue to support a regular farmer program. This is a 4-week discussion and each week we will have specific topics that we will be concentrating on.

In the first week, you will need to introduce yourself and take part in the icebreaker activity, see below for more information.
In week 2, we will focus on knowing your audience and see how you can turn your listenership into money.
In week 3, we will concentrate on what are the best sources of revenue for a radio station, and particularly for a farmer program, and how to diversify revenue.
In week 4, the final week, we will look at how you can use social media to raise funds for your program or station.

These 4 weeks are a chance for us all to learn from each other. I would also like to introduce our resource person for this e-discussion Denis Lindo @DenisLindo . He will tell us more about himself shortly.

Your task for this week:

Click on the ā€œreplyā€ button and introduce yourself. Your introduction should include your name, where you are from, the name of your radio station, and your role at the radio station. Then as an icebreaker tell us about the strangest or funniest advert your station has aired. If you canā€™t think of any examples from your station you can tell us about adverts youā€™ve heard on other stations.

If there are other topics you would like to discuss you can visit the Cafe and make a post there.

Cheers

My names are Martin Mwape. I am in Eastern Zambia in a town called Chipata. I work for a radio station called Breeze FM. I am the head of the Technical Department. I am also a radio programme producer and presenter.

The funniest advert I have heard on my station was a poorly dramatized health situation where the man was supposed to have died but the announcer brought the sad news laughing.

Hi @MartinMwape, you are welcome. We are happy to have you on board. We believe you are still going to share about a strangest or funniest advert you ever heard.

Hi @Alu

We are delighted to have you here. Thank you for sharing about the advert. I believe it was funny, more like the person who announced it was happy that the man died.

I am happy to be here, My Name is Ekotu Richard, from Uganda, I work for Voice of Lango Fm based in Lira Northern Uganda as a station and programs manager.

The funniest advert i have heard from other station was from local herbalist talking about if you want to get rich you contact him, and this left me wondering how rich this man could be if it was true that he has powers to make others rich.

Hiā€¦

My name is Jovine Johansen (Tanzanian), am working with Maisha FM 100.1 Dodoma as a administrative Manager , this is a health media which seek to advocacy issues related to health of human being and non human being. The station is on a maturing stage because we have two year of airing our content. We have been trying to advocacy different issues but health is mostly important to us.

On agriculture sector also has health party of it, which we pay more attention even those other issues of farming have been discussed via documentary, live talk and interviews.

The funnest ad I have on my station is from Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority which tell how people are suffering from eating foods prepared from dirty place. The impact of this ad is on addressing the main cause of diarrhea and many other diseases caused by poorly eating of food.

hello
My name is Zefrine Machesha and I came from tanzania and Iā€™m a radio presenter and Former Manager at Ilasi Fm radio in Songwe region near Zambia border .

Hello my name is Ampeire Albert. I am a broadcast journalist with Voice Of Kigezi in Kabale-Uganda. I am the program host of the night show dubbed Highland Tunes and same time the stations social media manager.
The funniest advert i have heard on my station was of a Waragi company where they used a name which resembled that of a young man who was contesting for youth Councillor seat and then later he failed to win the elections. The advert was talking about a guy who wanted to be called honorable but he always gets high on cheap Waragi so they wanted him to upgrade to that brand if he wanted to keep his honorable name.

Good Morning from Kabale South western Uganda!
My name is Brenda Mugwisagye, am from Uganda.
I work with Voice of Kigezi,FM, am a presenter and
producer.
Wellā€¦i thought some advert was funny, donā€™t know
about what you think. Soā€¦this old man father in law
figure is running after a hen, he is not fast enough
and it keeps leaving himā€¦he is saying catch it
catch it as he runs after the hen, then neighbour
comes in to inquire why the old man is running and
falling just to catch a henā€¦he says he has visitors
and needs a hen to slaughter. Neighbour brings in
the message of pre slaughtered chicken being
available somewhere and no need for the shameful
running and falling down of elderly respectable men.

Hello,
My name is Catherine Apalat from Uganda. I work for a community radio station called Mama FM 101.7, the first womenā€™s radio in Africa.I work as a programmes manager.
Funniest Advert
It is about Insurance and Mom and Dad have a baby who is yet to start school. The parents havenā€™t planned for the childā€™s education so the mother of the child makes a calculation of the amount of money they will need to educate the child till she graduates. The amount generated makes the Dad of the child to collapse and the mom to worry so much. The funny part though true in our everyday life today was the calculation of the tuition fees which was in trillions and collapsing of the parent.

Hi @Jovine_Johansen_Joel

Welcome to the Barza e-discussion. We are hapoy to have you.

It is sometimes funny how people address good hygiene. Some people will think they will not get diarrhoea because they believe where they cook is clean. It is tricky as people will neglect other important aspects

My name is Sarah Mawerere (smawerere), I am a Ugandan from Uganda. I work with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Radio. I am a Producer, and my beats are agriculture, gender and development. I also present a weekly gender and development programme. More still , i do occasional news gathering and reporting.

Icebreaker: My station (UBC) has aired a strangest and funniest MTN mobile telecom company advert on data bundles. This is where a man uses a tape measure; puts it around the waist of a man and that of a woman while he dances in a funny way! What i hear him say is that everyone measures differently, and so the data bundles are for every size. That one can get as little as a small waist and others can get big data bundles like those with big waist!! It is done in a funny way that some people at times wonderā€¦ what a strange advert this is!

Hi @machesha

Welcome to Barza. We are delighted to have you here. We are also looking forward to hearing more about a strange or funny advert you have heard.

I am Hajat Rehema Ndagire, Programs Manager at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, Kampala. I am also in charge of UBC Butebo, a station which broadcasts eight programs in Eastern Uganda languages; I am also a Kiswahili programs presenter, which include a Framersā€™ program known as ā€œKilimo Boraā€.
A funny advert I remember was by MTN, a mobile phone company in Uganda, they were advertising a ā€œData Backupā€ service for people to adopt. It included a man who was talking to his wife while in a taxi, he was seated next to an open window and his phone was snatched by a thug, his next cry was ā€˜Oh my God I have lost all my contacts, what am I going to do?ā€™, In came a soothing voice -ā€œDonā€™t worry MTN has taken care of that, just visit your nearest MTN Outlet/shop to have all your data restored including your contacts!ā€
I wish you all a good discussion. I am glad to be on this platform.
