Week 1: Introductions and icebreaker

Indeed @Tuheirwe_Kevin that was a strange advert wondering if anybody would be interested in the bonus coffin.

@obolo such adverts by herbalists are common here in Uganda too despite the ban from Uganda Communications Commission to Radio stations to stop giving listeners misleading information especially on health.

My name is Ntakirutimana Jenipher, I work with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation on one of it 11 radio stations known as UBC WEST, as a Program Presenter in URUFUMBIRA language. I present in different genres including Agriculture. I am here to learn more from this e discussion. Thank you.

Am most grateful to be part of this discussion and look forward to learn with everyone here especially @Busi_Ngcebetsha thank you so much hope to meet you one day.

My name is Evelyn Balozi. A marketing personnel and Radio Presenter at Utume fm in Northern Tanzania (Lushoto district in Tanga region).
The funniest advert in my radio was solar panels promo withouts contact.

Am Arinaitwe Bright:Am from Ibanda district but currently working with Voice of Kigezi one the radio station based in south western Uganda in Kigezi region to be specific kabale district.
Am atalk show host and amid morning show program host.

In Ghana, we have the Food and Drugs Authority as the regulatory entity but these herbalists would still come with a certification from them so it leaves the media house with little to do.

We can only act after such negative information has been passed on air.

Hello Busi, good morning. My advert is about encouraging women to deliver at health centers. Some women still deliver at home, even though there is a lot of decry against that. Thanks. An NGO is doing that.

As for a wonderful advert, I heard one advert that likened a traditional medicine to “Tchaka The Zulu” the Ngoni warrior. They say it can fight diseases this time.

Hello @Ntakirutimana

Hello @Bintispark

Welcome to Barza! We are delighted to have someone from the marketing side of things. As we learn together on this journey, we are also looking forward to hearing how you market the programs in your station.

An ad with no contacts? Are they assuming to be well known? If yes, then why advertise?

My name is Pascal Mweruka I work with Farm Radio International as the Regional Radio Craft Development officer for East and Southern Africa. Am humbled to be part of the team that will learn and share how best we can generate income to our radio programs so that we get income and get paid for the work well done. I have worked in this field for some time first as a broadcaster of a developmental show, a news editor, out side broadcaster and producer of many shows. I once worn an a ward with BBC WST as the bet news editor among rural radio stations in Uganda, also the developmental program that I was doing emerged number one after a survey that was conducted by ILO of UN among the sampled 36 radio programs. I have a lot of successes to share as well as to learn from you.

Now my funny advert on radio of recent is about the two people one is analogue and another one is digital so these two characters are described in the advert according to what each one does to pass time as he/she waits for the appointment (A date) I know people from Uganda have listened to this piece. It funny to me how these two characters are behaving in that narration. Enjoy the discussion.

Hello @Busi_Ngcebetsha and @Bintispark I am thinking that Ad was just to ‘hammer home’ the name (brand) of the product before looking at the sales aspect.

It could be that the producer of that particular Ad wanted the brand to ‘stick’ in the minds of listeners so when they (listeners) think of a solar product, the first name to come in mind should be that brand.

This is known as BRAND RECALL

NB: This is done for a period of time (at least 3 months) then a new Ad is done with contacts and location.

Greetings professional colleagues,
Its awesome to be in this House, looking at the numbers of experienced and resourceful you all many of us will learn a thing or two. I am a Journalist from Zambia. I have spent a little bit of time as a print Journalist, and broadcasting on various issues with a number of radio stations since 2002. Last two years I too have had the privilege to work as a Journalist Mentor with the BBC MA, a role that has taken me to all provinces of Zambia working with over 20 radio stations, largely community. Farming has been one major aspect of my work both as print and broadcast Journalist.
ADVERT: A Farmer waited for farming inputs to arrive as promised by the government and its agents before he could start cultivating. He waited up to towards a close of the rain season without farming inputs coming. The farmer was depressed the government announced a cut in floor price of produce next marketing Sean by close to 50%. Some day a politician arrived with another bag full of promises but the farmer told the politician to go campaign/le to his households. :raised_hands::handshake:

My Name is Hajji Kawenja Abubaker, a Ugandan radio personality, working with CBS Fm Buganda radio. I do host the Morning Show “Bwakedde Mpulira” every week starting 6:00 am to 9:00 am.

One of the funniest adverts that have run on my station was in relation to a quack land dealer who was convincing the buyer to take the plot of land at a giveaway price but advised him to only construct at night since the “spirits” in the area do not allow any broad day construction.
