Week 4: Using social media to generate revenue for your farmer program

Can you please further elaborate on how this is done? The reason is that most companies have their own facebook account and would prefer doing the advertisement there themselves.

this discussion is very interesting

Thank you my brother Obolo, As a radio station, some times we have gotten a request from our advertisers to advertise them on air and on line. It’s true they have their own platforms, but it doesn’t stop there. Some of these companies have big following in urban areas, and yet in rural setting where your radio is operating, you find that you have more following than them, so they can tap into that by giving you to advertise their products in your platform.

Very insightful. Thanks so much.

Hi…
My contribution to Week 4 are as follows
It is true that Facebook and now Whats app are well used as a feedback tool from the Audience, but to farmer program of my station, we still on MOBILE TEXT MESSAGES. This is more useful than those mentioned Social platform as despite the chances people have to access Free Facebook, they prefer text messages/Calling in due to the Bundles of different Telephone companies with sending unlimited SMS. We have tried to use Facebook account, the incoming responding messages are not directly from targeted farmers.

I see a link between using Social media to generate revenue because, with those platforms can easing other people who are not farmers to have the intended content of farming by posting different hints to good farming, The spread of this content can influence other people to tune in to your station to listen the program. The increasing of the listeners can be turned into batter system of exchange to sponsors & advertisers to join to the program to sponsor or advertise.

Also social media platforms can be used to advertisers to meet their customers to the business they are doing. Mostly, our radio stations social media accounts have many followers & likes which influence sponsors & advertisers to be convinced to advertise with you, via your social platforms.

**My question:
-What is the importance of a program to have many presenters? may be more than one, either four to five to a program of two hours?
-Is there a need to have more than one presenters to our farmers program? especially those of half or an hour Program?

Hello @Cryton

It is interesting indeed, we would also like you to share your experiences.

@wengo

Would you say you are reaching your target market or you are reaching anyone with access to twitter?

Hello @machesha

Thank you for your contribution. I am sure our resource person @DenisLindo will cover this question.

Hi @Jovine_Johansen_Joel

Can you please explain more what you mean by having four to five presenters for a two hour program? Do they all go on air at the same time?

In my country, I see those Commercial radios nowadays are preferring to have more than three people in the Studio & whole of them are going live at the same time. Whatever is discussion or with different segments.

Hello Colleagues,

These are my contributions for week 4

What social media do you use for your radio program, or at your station and why?

At Mama Fm, we use face book and whatsapp. Face book and whatsapp are the commonly known social media platforms in Uganda.

In your experience, which social media is most effective for interacting with your audience?

Whatsapp has turned out to be more effective because most of our audience at Mama Fm prefer using voice notes than sending texts, so it is easy for them to record a voice note and share their views in the program. We play the voice notes on air as the program goes on and listeners get to hear their views. However, we make it a point to respond to every listener that has sent in a voice note or message.

Do you see a link between using social media and generating revenue for your radio program? Please explain.

Yes! The link is there because I believe if a radio program has a huge and “interactive” following on social media, the number of followers can be used to look for sponsorship.

Secondly, potential advertisers can easily identify the program through social media platforms like face book, and they will look for you for a partnership. We have observed in this e-discussion that advertisers are looking for numbers and interactive programs, so since we have small area coverage as community radios, we can effectively use social media and widen our coverage, be able to convince advertisers that we have what it takes to promote their products and get a share of those funds.

What is one question about generating revenue for your program that you would like to ask people participating in this e-Discussion?

How best can I package a topic on social media to get as many responses as possible?

Thank you!
Laila Ndagire
Mama Fm, Uganda

Thank you @obolo.

This is something we should consider, because if we want more farmers to participate in our programs using social media platforms, we should teach them how they are used. I visited Women’s farming groups in Luweero district (rural area) and taught the women how to use send and receive text messages and they were all excited about the exercise because most of them were using the phones for only receiving phone calls. We wanted to send them messages about the prices of produce in different markets and also the changes in the planting seasons, and it was a success.

Hello Colleagues,
**Hope we are all fine. **
Week four

Mama FM uses Face book, Sound cloud and Twitter in her radio programming. We choose to use Face book because most of our fans are using it and know how to use it compared to twitter. Our fans/followers are mainly young male and female (not a big number) concentrated in the urban centers of our coverage area, they have access to a smart phone and can access and afford internet. Mama FM uses sound cloud for productions of weekly news features/Special Reports which are produced weekly/monthly and after the content is downloaded on sound cloud for fans who may not be able to listen in at the time the news feature was aired to listen in at their own free time. Twitter comes in because all the Face book posts are linked to Mama FM twitter account and they are mainly in the local language Luganda and sometimes English.

Face book and Whatsapp are the most effective because of the feedback we get at the end of each radio program. Mama FM has a face book account like I mentioned earlier. Presenters of different radio programs post issues or topics before hand for comments from the listeners/fans/followers. Some programs especially entertainment-Music shows get many comments because of song requests however discussing real issues besides politics sometimes generates few comments. We do not blame the fans but we look into the phrasing of the topic and see how best the topic should have been paraphrased to generate a good discussion. Our followers get updates everyday for the different programs including News updates. We have tried to make it simpler for them by use of hash tags for easy identity and for the radio’s branding like #MamaFM #MamaFMNews #FemaleTuesday. In the Agriculture program the norm has been that the field reporter takes pictures of the farmer at his or her work and before going on air, we post the images of course with the full permission of the farmer; post a question and a brief about the farmer and some achievements. In cases where we host organizations or business entities, we take their photos in studio and tag the organization when posting on face book.

There is a strong link because if the station has a big following who like and comment on posts then it is a huge opportunity for the radio to use such content to generate revenue for a radio program. Some of the comments may need help or referral to maybe the advertiser in terms of buying and using their products.

I would like to know more about the short programs of 20-30 minutes and how best they can be used to generate revenue? and drama formats seem to work best if we are to target the youth, any member with a sample of a farmer radio drama programme please share with me.

Thanks
Catherine Apalat

That is the same response we also get of not having a media budget, because of such responses, in 2017 beginning Mama FM organised a stakeholders meeting. Different civil society organisations were invited and we made a presentation about the radio, programming, advertising opportunities, why Mama? and need for partnerships with them and include the radio in their budgets. Many organisations came and appreciated the initiative to know more about the radio and its programming. After the meeting we followed up, some responded and we are still following up. It requires constant communication with them.

Very good question and I look forward to the answer. I hear social media content is packaged differently from that of the traditional media. @Busi_Ngcebetsha and @DenisLindo please help us out.

Jovine how do you see a link between social media and revenue generation yet you use mobile text?

Not Really,
But which type of Community are you talking about?
The program would run better on Facebook page where you have more links than whatsapp, my thought.
Thanks for your inputs@mikepac715

@Odongo_Wendo_Bonifac, I have said am using Mobile text mostly, but I do also use Social platform. I noted that we do have responses on Social media which is not more likely to be from the intended farmers that why we Mobile MESSAGES than social media SMS.
